The Prayer Stages of a Growing Disciple

Dear God, give me what I want.

Dear God, give me what I want and if I get what I want I will give you want.

Dear God, I will give you what you want and hope I get what I want.

Dear God, I will give you what you want, it does not matter what I get.

Dear God, I give you what you want.

The Liberty Dance

This past Sunday we were treated to a spontaneous, innocent, joy-of-the-moment expression of worship by a three year old. I thought of these two verses.

Matthew 11: 25, 26    At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure. (niv)

Psalm 8:1-2   Lord our Lord,   your name is the most wonderful name in all the earth!
It brings you praise in heaven above.      You have taught children and babies
to sing praises to you. (ncv)

The Heart of It All

What after all is the heart of being a Christian?  In the past 25 years many new translations of the Bible have been introduced. After that the Study Bibles came.  Will another translation or another Study Bible really bring us closer to Jesus?  Add to all the Bible options a lot of Christian practices, programs and activities. The flurry of activity can cloud rather than aid the discovery of Christ. They can also make you really tired.  The secret is to have one focus

The Jews have their Shema:  “Hear O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord.”

In the New Testament, we have Jesus is Lord,

Does Jesus Christ have a solid claim to a place in our lives? He created us and placed us in a beautiful world. He redeemed us from the pain and brokenness of our separation from Himself. Therefore God has the right to claim the place of Lord in and over our lives. Our Christian activities, our Christian events, our Christian programs and our Christian systems, these are not Lord of our lives.  Jesus is the Lord of all.

My personal goal is to remain connected to Him, to hear from Him and respond in life based on what He has said to me.  In the belief, trust and confidence from what God has spoken to me, I move forward. What God shows me will always line up with His promises. Jesus Christ made me, He loves me and He is with me. Any other thought is a lie from the enemy.

Jesus is the one Lord, and He is our one love.

Philippians 1:1-11; Colossians 1:15-29; Deuteronomy 6

PS: I did just get a new Study Bible, a gift from a friend, and I really like it.

WHAT WE DO

How and where we do the Jesus work:

Leaving: replacing personal and Christian activities with time spent on building relationships.

Living among the natural activities of the people around us.

Listening: watching and responding to the needs of those around us and in particular the God-seekers.

Loving: receiving God’s free offer to graciously live life and bless others without expectations.

Seven Basic Commands of Christ

Jesus ordered many things but we can group them under seven basic commands. In Acts 2:37-47 we find the 3,000 converts of the first New Testament church obeying all of them in their basic form. The only one that is not named is love but we see it in their fellowship. Jesus’ commands are the foundation upon which we build all teaching and ministry:

Repent, believe, and receive the Holy Spirit (conversion, regeneration), Mark 1:15; John 3:16; 20:22

Be baptized and live the new life it initiates, initiating ongoing transformation, Matthew 28:18-20; Romans 6:1-14

Love God, neighbor, fellow disciples, the needy in a practical way and enemies (forgive), Matthew 22:36-40; John 13:34-35, Luke 10:25-37; Matthew 5:43-48

Break bread (Communion, related to all that we do to worship), Matthew 26:26-28; John 4:24

Pray (private and family devotions, intercession and spiritual warfare), John 16:24

Give (stewardship of our time, treasure and talents), Luke 6:38

Make disciples (witness for Christ, shepherd, apply the Word, train leaders, send missionaries), Matthew 28:18-20

The commands and their corresponding duties are like links in a chain. A church is no stronger than its weakest link; we develop obedience to all of the commands. An Asian tribe compares Jesus’ commands to an oxcart wheel. Jesus is the hub; His basic commands are seven spokes. If a church neglects one or more commands their spokes shrink, the wheel is no longer round; the oxen strain in vain to pull the loaded cart.

We also obey Jesus when we observe His apostles’ commands. They wrote with His inspired authority. The commands in their letters, however, are not basic in the same way--they are not the foundation or 'basement floor' of the building. They belong to the second story and on up, along with all other biblical doctrine; we will spend all eternity learning more about God. They are for leaders and believers already baptized and under a church's care.

Obeying Jesus is a massive doctrine in Scripture. Nothing is more basic for faith and ministry:
-- They provide the foundation for our faith; to obey His words is to build on the Rock (Matt. 7:24-28).
-- They provide for a relational faith; Jesus said, "If you love me, obey my commands" (John 14:15).
-- They provide the basic curriculum to make disciples. (Matt. 28:18-20).

WHAT WE BELIEVE

Welcome to Journey Christian Fellowship.
We are a new church that has launched in 2012. We are on a journey together. Our core group has been friends for the past three to four years, some for more. We are in love with Jesus and have experienced His grace. As Christians, we have found that Jesus Christ calls  us to be disciples.  The journey is to walk daily with Christ and with each other.  Hebrews says that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. That means Jesus can touch our past with forgiveness and healing.  So many Christians carry baggage from their past. Jesus calls us to walk with Him today and he is able to secure our destiny. Our destiny is to advance the glory of His name.  We are not a church about architecture or committees; we are a church of relationships with Christ and with each other.

Also...

Our Three Foundations

     Jesus Christ is both our Savior and Lord.

     The Bible, as God’s Word, is the final authority in all of our lives.

     These two commitments are to be lived out in relationship with other believers in a local church.

Apostles' Creed:

    I believe in God the Father Almighty,
    maker of heaven and earth;

    And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:
    who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
    born of the Virgin Mary,
    suffered under Pontius Pilate,
    was crucified, dead, and buried;
    the third day he rose from the dead;
    he ascended into heaven,
    and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
    from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

    I believe in the Holy Spirit,
    the holy catholic church,
    the communion of saints,
    the forgiveness of sins,
    the resurrection of the body,
    and the life everlasting. Amen. [ source ]

Nicene Creed:

   We believe in one God,

        the Father, the Almighty,
        maker of heaven and earth,
        of all that is, seen and unseen.

    We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

        the only Son of God,
        eternally begotten of the Father,
        God from God, Light from Light,
        true God from true God,
        begotten, not made,
        of one Being with the Father;
        through him all things were made.
        For us and for our salvation

            he came down from heaven,
            was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
            and became truly human.
            For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
            he suffered death and was buried.
            On the third day he rose again
            in accordance with the Scriptures;
            he ascended into heaven
            and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
            He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
            and his kingdom will have no end.

    We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

        who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
        who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
        who has spoken through the prophets.
        We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
        We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
        We look for the resurrection of the dead,

            and the life of the world to come. Amen.   [ source ]

Kingdom Message

The Lord's will is that no one would perish but that all people would receive eternal life through faith in Christ Jesus.  We pray for healing because it is God's will.  The Lord's Spirit is always life-giving.  Preach, heal, deliver.  Mark 6:12-13, Mark 16:14-20, John 6:63, John 3:16, 1 John 3:23 (our love is in giving freely what we have freely received--as Christ did for us).  In God's Kingdom all sickness and sadness will pass away.  Revelation 21:4-7, Luke 12:32, Luke 17:20-21.  "Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven."
